Plus: 37 Sundance Cinematographers Talk Shop; World War II Epic Hits the Small Screen; Fests Head West
Happy Thursday, friends. We had a blast celebrating Sundance with you this week (in Park City and around the world). By the numbers:
750+ Portrait members associated with this year’s festival
500+ attendees to our Portrait mixer
70% of this year’s Sundance films made by Portrait members
A huge thank you to our partners at Deadline, Adobe Camera to Cloud, 8 Above, The Film Collaborative, the DPA, Film Fatales, and In Good Company.
Don’t forget to save contacts from our interactive Sundance rolodex before the end of the fest! Watch for a how-to guide tomorrow if you were an attendee.
Sundance may (almost) be over, but this year’s just getting going. Let’s dive in.
Roll of Honor
Say hello to featured Portrait members on the app.
What to Watch this Weekend: Out On Tour
Tour of Duty: Masters of the Air. “Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg have finally brought their third World War II series to the small screen. It boasts a mammoth ensemble… requires an astonishing quantity of technical effects… and, when its key moments land, is equal parts breathtaking, exhilarating and rousingly inspirational” (THR). Ayyappadas Vijayakumar, Visual Effects Editor; Jac Fitzgerald, Cinematographer; Michelle Twarowska, Voice. Friday on Apple TV+.
Concert Tour: Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero. “Whether you love or hate him, it’s hard to deny his work is viral, and the internet seems to gravitate towards his provocative form of entertainment” (Rolling Stone). Zac Manuel, Director, Cinematographer; Caryn Capotosto, Producer; Rebecca Teitel, Production Executive; Carissa Clarke, Account Executive: Harbor Picture Company; Billy Hobson, Colorist; Michelle Kwong, Production Assistant; Ben Kolak, Camera Operator; Carmen Delaney, Camera Operator; Sean Wang, Hi-8 Camera Operators; Aysia Marotta, Camera Operator; Vivian Lau, Camera Operator / Hi-8 Camera Operators / Lead Camera Assistant & DIT / Still Photographer. Saturday on HBO Max.
Tour De Force: Binging Sundance. If you plan to watch as many Sundance films as possible during their brief online window, read how 37 cinematographers shot their narrative features, with commentary from Portrait DPs Sam Davis (Didi (弟弟)), Jac Fitzgerald (Freaky Tales), Jih E Peng (Girls Will Be Girls), Kevin Fletcher (It’s What’s Inside), Martin Levant (Kidnapping, Inc.), Joris Kerbosch (Krazy House), Diego Romero Suarez Llanos (Reinas), Iikka Salminen (Sebastian), David Bolen (Thelma), and Gerald Kerkletz (Veni Vidi Vici).
… our central thread was to ensure that the audience was always in Mira’s internal space, that you felt a part of her world and the struggles that she faces in a deeply intimate way. It influenced when we chose to use a shallower depth of field, how close we were to her, how the landscape and world around her figure into her psyche.
