What to Watch This Weekend

Grittily, Gorgeously Ever After
Sinners. “A bloody, muscular, barrelhouse of a vampire movie that throbs like the neck of a blues guitar on fire” (IndieWire). Timotheus Davis, Art Director.
The Ugly Stepsister. “The film inverts Cinderella into a gross-out social satire filled with gags and lush décor” (AV Club). Ada Solomon, Theis Nørgaard, Co-Producers; Marcel Zyskind, Cinematographer; Thomas Foldberg, Prosthetics Makeup Effects; Tormod Ringnes, Sound Designer.
The Legend of Ochi. “Ochi prompts one to think, “How did they do that?” only to be even more incredulous when realizing the techniques employed. That’s film sorcery” (Variety). Ashim Ahuja, Visual Effects Producer; Sheherezada Kouchaki, Cast Makeup Artist; Andreea Dardea Tesdall, Makeup Designer; Elizabeth Warn, Costume Designer; Kelsi Ephraim, Set Decorator; Leslie Mondundu, Animator.
A Master at Work, A Master Reworked
The Shrouds. “Even when purporting to tell his own story, [Director David] Cronenberg cannot help but leave us with something more expansively unsettling” (The New Yorker). Christopher Donaldson, Editor; Jill Purdy, Supervising Sound Editor; Larissa Palaszczuk, Key Makeup Artist.
The Wedding Banquet. This remake of Ang Lee’s 1993 breakthrough comedy of manners is “funny and poignant in equal measure" (THR). Amber Crombach, Makeup Department Head; Sam Trounce, Post Producer; Jay Wadley, Composer; Daniel Bekerman, Executive Producer; Matt Drake, Sound Department; Allie Steffler, Additional Crew.

Life, Liberty, and Satire for All
Government Cheese. “Wes Anderson meets the Coen brothers in tongue-in-cheek morality tale” (FT). Tecia Esposito, Script Supervisor; Emilio Mazariegos, Associate Producer; Brian Dunlop, Dialogue Editor; Nicole Ruby, Property Master.
#1 Happy Family USA. “Half coming-of-age story… half brutal satire about Islamophobia in the early 2000s. It encourages viewers to find humor and humanity … from what was a dark period for many American families” (NYT). Hannah Ayoubi, Director; Steve Giammaria, Supervising Sound Editor.
