Weekly Portrait: Winter Storms, Austin Dreams
Join us at SXSW! Plus MoMA screenings, weekend listens, Oscar previews, and more
Happy Thursday, friends.
Southern Californians like Kasia are bracing for the big blizzard. Northern Californians like Jean Ellen are dodging the wind storms’ flying trees. As friends across the US get hit with extreme weather, all we can think about is… sunshine and breakfast tacos.
That’s right. SXSW is two weeks away, and we’re trading our Sundance beanies for cowboy boots. Portrait House is back with exclusive filmmaker panels, breakfast taco brunches, and cocktail conversations.
Heading to SXSW? Sign up to join us in Austin during opening weekend.
We can’t wait to host you. More to come over the coming days - stay tuned.
Until then, survive your storm — literally, metaphorically, spiritually — with this week’s great work and opportunities from Portrait members.
Into the maelstrom!

MoMA Doc Fortnight: The weekend outing we’d brave bad weather for
MoMA’s international festival is in full force this week. Check out the full program and these featured films from Portrait members:
The Tuba Thieves. From 2011 to 2013, tubas went missing from a dozen high schools — sparking this genre-defying film. Portrait members Rachel Nederveld, producer, and Derek Howard, DP. MoMA Feb. 25th and streaming online.
La Bonga. Twenty years after an entire Afro-Colombian village fled during Colombia’s civil war, former inhabitants return, on foot, to a village that now only exists in their memory. Gabriella Garcia-Pardo, producer. MoMA March 5th.
Mi Padre y Mi Papá: Weekend podcast pick from NPR’s Radio Ambulante
Want to work on your Spanish? Listen to Mi Madre y Mi Papá, the latest episode from NPR’s Radio Ambulante, produced by Portrait member Ora DeKornfeld.
Radio Ambulante has created an app called Lupa to help Spanish learners rapidly become more fluent using its stories. Learn Spanish as it’s really spoken — including in Ora’s episode!
Newfound Oxygen: Steady Holiday’s new album — and our aspiration for every weekend
On our playlist this weekend: Newfound Oxygen, the latest album from Steady Holiday. One review called it “spaciously vivacious” — isn’t that what we all want to feel every Saturday?
Even more delightful: the Back-to-the-Future inspired video for the title track, directed by Portrait member Isaac Ravishankara.
Berlinale Talents 2023: Insider sessions now streaming online
As Berlin International Film Festival’s summit for outstanding creatives wraps on the ground, many of the workshops are now available online.
Congratulations to Portrait member and cinematographer Mia Cioffi Henry and the Berlinale Talents this year.
Have something exciting to share? We’ll include it next week.
